For ages Jews were very important part of cultural and economical life of Austria. Jewish community of Vienna was one of the largest in whole Europe. During our walking tour we will learn about most famous members of this community like Gustav Mahler, Arthur Schnitzler, Sigmund Freud or Theodor Herzl. We will also visit most important sites in Vienna related with Jewish history. We will walk through the Jewish Textile Quarter near Rudolfsplatz and get to Morzinplatz to see the monument that honors the Jewish residents of Vienna who were imprisoned by the Gestapo (the German Nazi Secret Police) during World War 2. We will also see the Stadttempel Synagogue – the only one that survived WW2 out of 94 synagogues which existed in Vienna in 1930s. Today it is the main house of prayer for the Viennese Jewish Community of about 7,000 members. We will finish our tour on Judenplatz where you will see the memorial to the 65,000 murdered Austrian Jews in the Holocaust. At Judenplatz there is also a Jewish Museum which you can visit after the tour on your own.
