The Wachau Valley is a picturesque land dotted with many objects of cultural heritage. The Wachau is stretch along the Daube river between two marvellous places of Melk and Krems.
The Wachau landscape features uncountable number of cliffs, charming villages, beautiful palaces, mysterious ruins of medieval castles, scenic vineyards and Baroque churches.
This area was inscribed into UNESCO's list, because of high visual and landscape qualities. The most interesting attactions of that region are: a Benedictine Abbeys in Melk and Göttweig, Schönbühel Castle, the village of Willendof where the famous statue of Venus of Willendorf was found, the medieval ruins of the castle in Durnstein, Krems, the museum of Wachau Valley in Weissenkirchen and much more.
The Abbey in Melk is one of the largest Baroque sacral complex in Europe and it is considered to be the most beautiful Baroque structure in Austria. A monastery was erected in the 11th century. In the 18th century the Baroque complex was bulit. Today, the abbey consists of a monumental church of ss. Peter and Paul, the 12th-century library, emperor's chambers, a museum, a church, gardens and farm buildings.
Durnstein has a long and eventful history which is dated back to medieval times when the first fortified defense castle was erected. In the 12th centuy, the king of Britain – Richard the Lionheart was kept in Durstein's castle for 2 years. Today, tourists can admire medieval defense walls, richly decorated town houses, the Collegiate Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, and more.
Krems is a historical city with many monuments and interesting sites. The most important attraction is the town gate of Steiner Tor. It was rebuilt in the Baroque style and now it is a symbol of Krems. In the Stein district, there are the 13th - century Romanesque church of Minorite, the 16th – century Salt warehouses, remains of city fortifications.
