In the area of the Styrian Alps, there are situated an outstanding technological solution - the construction of the Semmering Railway. The solid construction of railway network is over 150 years old. It is one of the most impressive feats of civil engineering which is dated back to times after Industrial Revolution. The railway network located in the south Austria and running 41km through Semmering Pass was inscribed into UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998. The first station is in Gloggnitz and the end is in Muerzzuschlag. This structure was built in 1848-1854 and it was the first high mountain railway in Europe. The route runs through picturesque landscape of Styrian Alps. There are numerous historic buildings of railway infrastructure such as railways stations, gatemen's boxes. Stones were the main source to built this structure. The railway network includes 14 tunnels (the longest one is almost 1,5km long), 16 viaducts, over 100 huge bridges hewed in rocks and 11 smaller iron bridges. The great challenge of that time engineering was creating such engine which could overcome an altitude of 436 m and sharp bends in mountains. This difficult task was solved thanks to Enghert engine. The highest point is at 895 m above sea level.
